Seems there is very much a "KCRW sound" that is very cool but somewhat narrow in taste. Clearly, there are artists that if you heard them on KCRW, you would know that he or she just died and they're playing a song in tribute, although they wouldn't touch the song otherwise. For instance, Neil Young is KCRW-approved. Crosby, Stills and Nash are not. Often they'll play covers of these artists but never the original thing.

Who are your favorites?

Mine: Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Black Sabbath, ELP, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, Focus, Supertramp and various 70s hard and progressive rock.
Beach Boys and Brian Wilson (KCRW played SMiLE out of respect I think).
Wendy & Lisa (Girl Bros.)

It's funny, I was looking at my CD collection and it's scary the percentage of artists there I learned about on KCRW.

The 88 and Flaming Lips played at the relatively intimate Knitting Factory main stage. God, it was good. The 88 was tight and wonderful, great performance and songs. Flaming Lips made it into a PARTY! With great visuals, confetti guns, and 2-foot balloons bouncing around the whole time... playing their favorites... Even had the audience singing a rousing version of Bohemian Rapsody, with lyrics and Bollywood imagery plastering the backdrop...
There's absolutely nothing on these Californians' third...album...that you haven't heard before on a hundred indie discs. Languid strum patterns, spooky pianos, shimmery arpeggios, distant e-bows sawing away under half-whispered, heavy-lidded vocals-- it's all there. But it's better than you might think...The reason it all works? Texture. Aaron Espinoza pays more attention to texture than just about anyone out there twiddling the proverbial knobs...Every instrument on "Everyone Down Here" sounds warm, yet weird: hearing a simple tremolo on a guitar lick is, somehow, a revelation. Even the tape hiss that haunts the first and last several seconds of each song is somehow rendered pleasant, like a handful of sand oozing between your fingers.
Perhaps no other guitarist has had as much influence on Jamaican music, and certainly none as far as contemporary reggae is concerned, than Earl "Chinna" Smith, the quintessential session musician and tour player.

In a career that has spanned over three decades, "Chinna" has made a name for himself with countless sessions for reggaes biggest names, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, and Agustus Pablo to name a few. Smith has literally played with everyone in reggae lending his unique guitar sound and arrangements to well over 300 recordings, including many of reggae music's most memorable classics.

When Smiths guitar work reached the ears of Bob Marley, he was asked to add his guitar sound to the reggae legends 1976 classic, "Rastaman Vibration" album, as well as touring with the Wailers. He also played guitar on several other sessions for Marley over the years, including several of the classic songs on "Exodus."

An unabashed purest, and a musician's musician, Chinna is committed to live recording, a trait that caries over to his guitar playing style which involves a minimum use of studio gadgets.

"People have stopped working and let electronics do their work for them," Chinna told Guitar Player Magazine in a 1983 interview, "I'm not against electronics but I believe if the music I'm playing can be more natural, then it will be more spiritual." Chinna continues to play and produce the music he loves and has much more yet to be released, so stay tuned...

We just got our theme camp address: 2:00 and Amnesia (1 block from the Esplanade).

Starting March 1, KCRW launches an extensive podcasting line-up that features our locally produced talk, news, cultural programs and commentaries (listings below), free of charge.

What is podcasting? Podcasting is KCRW To Go! A podcast is an MP3 audio file that can be automatically downloaded to your personal computer and in turn transferred to an iPod or other MP3 player. You use a podcasting application that checks the site regularly and starts a download whenever it finds something new.

KCRW’s roster of podcasts includes our nationally distributed programs - both public affairs and cultural: To the Point -- Warren Olney's daily program focusing on the hot-button issues of the day; Left, Right & Center -- a political week-in-review with talking heads Arianna Huffington, Tony Blankley, Robert Scheer and Matt Miller; Bookworm with Michael Silverblatt, The Treatment where Elvis Mitchell talks with the influential and creative forces in movies and entertainment, and The Business (weekly beginning March 21!) hosted by Variety reporter Claude Brodesser.

We're also excited to expand your opportunities to listen to KCRW's unique and impressive line-up of weekly commentators. These short segments will introduce you to Pulitzer Prize winning car columnist Dan Neil, The New York Observer’s TV reporter Joe Hagan, “real life” in Hollywood, courtesy of producer/writer Rob Long, and The Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern with film reviews, among others.

What about music programming? Copyright and legal issues currently prevent the station from offering music programs like Morning Becomes Eclectic via podcast, but we'll be monitoring any developments that will make this possible in the future.

How do you get started?
The basic requirements for podcasting are a computer, podcasting software and an Internet connection (the higher the speed, the better). To take your podcast with you, an iPod or any MP3 player is also needed.

Visit KCRW's podcasting page for complete instructions on how to install the software on your computer and to "subscribe" to a podcast feed. Then, the next time you sync, the MP3 of your KCRW program will be on your computer, and if you're set up, on your iPod.

KCRW's decision 10 years ago to launch a website and begin streaming its programs positioned the station as an “early adopter” of the new digital technologies - and we're excited to continue this tradition.

Happy Podcasting!

Complete Podcast Listing

Programs:
The Treatment - Elvis Mitchell giving "the treatment" in entertainment and pop culture interviews
The Business - Variety's Claude Brodesser examines the entertainment biz
Final Curtain - Obits for radio

Art Talk with Edward Goldman - Art reviews with a unique accent
